This well painted 8-foot-by-5-foot full body "iconic oil-on-canvas portrait"of George Washington was drawn by Gilbert Stuart in 1796. Gilbert Stuart was one of the most popular portraitist in the United States between the years of 1755 and 1828.This painting was given as a gift to  Marquis of Lansdowne. That is the reason the portrait was named the Lansdowne portrait. This  portrait is of  George Washington in in all black with a black suit, pants, and shoes. His hand is put out as if he was presenting something and the other dangles down holding a sword. But this sword is not a sword for battle. This resembles America's democracy.
Later "In 2001, The Donald W. Reynolds Foundation committed $30 million to buy the painting and created a permanent home for it at the National Portrait Gallery where it had previously been on anonymous loan." Even today the portrait can be found there.
